He was one of the first people in Bengal to have written and directed a Science-Fiction drama (Hothat Uranus-e, 1967) and was the Vice President of the theatre group Chakrameta Juba Natya Sangastha. From where he moved on to found his own theatre group called the Praghunik ShilpiGoshthi which actively churned out plays and musicals through the 70's (e.g. Kokil Kahini and Raghupati O Tarani Sen). He has often written, directed and acted in the theatre afterwards. He also has worked on a number of vocal drama performances on novel themes.
His interest in magic was sparked by a neighbour Mr. Sukumar Mukherjee who was a magic scholar, he was the one to tutor Amar Sen in the basics of magic. From where his interest peaked and by his early Twenties he was professionally performing. His prowess as a specialist card magician had grown to such proportions that at one time he was known as 'The King of Cards' in the magicians' community of Kolkata. In fact magic was the common medium via which he met his HandShadowGraphy partner Mr. Sabyasachi Sen. Though out of professional magic for a considerable number of years, he took up a challenge to present a magic show in Hindi at Varanasi in 2008 which was a grand success.
Amar Sen was known in the public not only for HandShadowGraphy but also as a regular TV actor, other than having appeared in various soaps and serials, he played one of the lead characters in Din Pratidin (Alpha Bangla channel) which ran for a very successful 300+ episodes. He has also worked in a number of Bengali telefilms.
